publishing time lags

I’m sure many of us have been frustrated by how long it takes to have academic work published, though often with good reason. What I find frustrating is sending in articles and having to wait what seems like a long time until you even hear if you’ve been accepted or rejected. Anyone have good/bad experiences they’d like to share?
