Some people think boredom is the main moral problem of our age. A common strategy to avoid boredom – diversion – is not any better. Kierkegaard wrote his PhD on the concept of irony wherein he criticised Schlegel’s notion of Romantic irony. Schlegel wrote a novel depicting a character who wished to create his self as an author creates a character. This ironic individual was detached from every role and situation, he therefore did not identify with any role and so, in the end, became nothing.
In light of this, simply put, Kierkegaard suggested that, although we could never fully, rationally justify our ethics or the unity of our self and life, we should nevertheless fully commit to them as the alternative is nihilism, the nothingness of a bored life. Whence his equation of subjectivity and truth.
I’m not sure if this is the right solution but I think we have the same problem.
