The only novel I read this month was Nicole Kraus’ Great House, which I previously blogged about as worth reading. I have started David Grossman’s To the end of the land, which is so far extremely good, and I suspect may well turn out to be amazing.
My novel count was low because I watched several films, the best of which was the excellent the secret in their eyes but I also watched the US and UK versions of house of cards. The economist pointed out that the US version is an exercise in nostalgia for when whips could control the houses and Congress felt it had some power to change things, whereas neither seems to apply much at the moment. I thought it lacked the interest of Borgen or West Wing because it lacked the dialectic between ethics and political limits to ethics so central to both.
For work I read stuff on or by Kant, Kierkegaard, Wittgenstein, Murdoch and Chris Insole. I also read more Leszek Kołakowski. I wrote a fair bit too.
